EMDR Trauma Therapy in Alberta
You have tried other therapies and nothing seems to work. You want to feel like yourself again. Perhaps you experienced a trauma in childhood or adulthood, such as neglect or abuse, bullying in school, domestic violence in a past relationship, sexual abuse, grief and loss of a loved one, a motor vehicle accident, medical procedure, difficult labour and delivery, workplace stressor, or witnessed the injury or death of someone else or battling your own health concerns.
You are tired of struggling to get through your days feeling disconnected, numb or sad, depressed, anxious and overwhelmed. It is hard to concentrate and focus on work, school and daily responsibilities. You no longer look forward to the things you used to enjoy. You feel irritable and snap at those you love. Your patience is low and you are avoiding interacting with people. You are worried, easily startled and on edge. Your sleep is disrupted, perhaps having nightmares or difficulty falling or staying asleep causing you to feel exhausted. You find it hard to trust others and your relationships are strained. You have chronic pain, gastrointestinal problems, and other physical ailments that have no clear medical cause. You might wonder who you are anymore and what you want in life.
EMDR could help! This is what EMDR looks like. You can choose to do EMDR online from the comfort of your own home or in person in our Olds office location. In your first session, you will have an assessment with your therapist. In the second session, you will complete resourcing so you can support your central nervous system to feel calm between sessions. Over time in your weekly sessions, you will move from that frozen-in-time feeling to remembering the trauma without it activating your body. You begin to feel less weighed down by sadness and fear, feeling like a heavy backpack is finally being lifted. You'll remember what it's like to be yourself again, with more clarity and energy. It's as if the fog in your mind starts to clear, and you can focus better on work, academics and your daily responsibilities. The activities and hobbies you used to enjoy become fun again. Plus, you'll notice that you're less irritable, and you can talk to your friends and family more easily. You can relax and awake feeling rested. Your physical aches and pains that don't seem to have a medical reason might improve. Trusting others, including yourself, is easier. You'll feel more sure about who you are, and your purpose in life. You start to dream, plan and make goals again. Whether you do EMDR online or in person, it's like finding the path back to a happier, healthier you.
